We recently had dinner at the Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant in Madeira, and it was an amazing experience. We ordered a selection of vegetarian dishes and fresh naan, and everything was simply outstanding. The flavors were rich, authentic, and perfectly spiced — you could really taste how much care goes into the cooking. The vegetarian dishes were vibrant and full of depth, easily among the best we’ve had anywhere. The naan was warm, soft, and freshly baked, the perfect accompaniment to every dish. The service was excellent as well. The staff was kind, attentive, and very welcoming, making the whole evening feel relaxed and enjoyable. If you’re looking for delicious vegetarian Indian food on Madeira, this place is an absolute must. Highly recommended — we’d love to come back! ~ Sven H

Nous sommes venu sans réservation le soir et ils ont tout fait pour pouvoir nous mettre sur la terrasse. Le service n’était pas super rapide mais pas lent non plus ! Les plats étaient incroyables (butter chicken, « jalfrezy » et le masala végétarien). L’un des meilleures butter chicken que j’ai mangé. Petit bémol pour les serveurs qui ne parlent pas portugais. ~ Oceane C

He repetido en varias ocasiones. Es muy buen sitio que ofrece comida típica de la India recién preparada. La materia prima es de excelente calidad y la variedad de la carta es amplia. El interior y la terraza con decoración moderna y acentos decentes de la India. El personal muy profesional, amable, educado y rápido. Altamente recomendable. Enhorabuena a todo el equipo. ~ Jose C

Für uns geschmacklich das beste Restaurant in unserem Madeira-Urlaub, sodass wir 2 mal dort hingegangen sind. Das Essen hatte eine gute Qualität und auch ordentlich Wums hinter. Wer nicht scharf mag, muss etwas aufpassen. Der Ausblick aufs Meer ist auch echt schön, nur wenn man einen doofen Platz erwischt hat, stören die Ventilatoren von den Klimaanlagen des benachbarten Hotels. ~ Marv

Wir waren heute zum ersten Mal im Taj Mahal in funchal. Das Ambiente ist wunderschön alles ist sehr sauber auch die Toiletten. Das Essen und allgemein die Auswahl ist super. Preis-Leistung stimmt einfach. Es war ein wunderschöner Abend. Wir würden wiederkommen ich kann diesen Laden nur empfehlen! Nein gesagt, wenn du nicht mehr da war duschen ~ Michelle S

Lo encontramos por sorpresa, hacía mucho que no comíamos en un hindú y la verdad que fue un acierto, fuimos tarde y nos atendieron estupendamente, la comida estupenda y las raciones abundantes. Nos sentamos en la terraza que tienen ambiente muy agradable. La calidad de la comida buena , el vino que nos aconsejaron de Setubal también un 10. ~ Olatz C

Wir haben hier so toll gegessen. Der Service war schnell, aufmerksam und super nett. Wir hatten es nicht ganz leicht in der Gegend vegetarisches/veganes essen zu finden. Hier wird man fündig! Für Menschen die nicht scharf essen können lohnt es sich vorher nachzufragen. Das Essen an sich war köstlich und das Ambiente sehr schön und angenehm! ~ Noura

Was a little nervous after reading some of the reviews re service... we hadn't booked but were seated straight away. We asked for drinks and poppadoms which came quickly... There were two female waitresses, who were both very efficient and clearly working hard and a younger waiter who was laying tables and on clear up duties... We ordered 3 mains, rice and naan. All arrived in the expected time for freshly cooked food... Everything was delicious and tasty...Chicken Shashlik served on a hot platter, with it's own portion of rice. Butter chicken for my son... a less spicy dish, but very tasty. The dupiaza was a little spicier than in the UK, but equally tasty... There was plenty to eat and they packed our leftovers in a foil tray to take away... All in all a decent meal with good service (visited on a Friday evening). ~ Kerrie F

Mega essen, mein Freund hat zum ersten Mal indisch gegessen, er hat die Teller wortwörtlich sauber gemacht. Sehr empfehlenswert. Mega service absolut nett und hilfsbereit, vor allem die Frau, die uns bedient hat. Hat uns sehr gefreut, ich habe schon öfters indisch gegessen, aber noch nie so lecker wie hier. Ich hatte vegetable basmati rice mit garlic naan und mein Freund Butter Chicken mit garlic naan. Delicious! ~ sa r

Unfassbar gutes Essen. Falls noch Zweifel bestehen, ob ein Abendessen hier wirklich lohnenswert ist: Ja! Die Bedienungen wahren sehr sympathisch und der Service war sehr gut. Mit Abstand das beste Restaurant in der Umgebung und eine wunderschöne Location. Empfehle das Restaurant sehr und die Preise sind für das Angebot (Service, Location und Qualität) unfassbar gut. Questo ristorante è ottimo. Peccato solo che sono italiana quindi chissà quando potrò ritornarci! Ho preso il pollo al burro con del riso e del pane, che dire: buonissimo! Porzioni giuste e prezzo giusto. Anche la location è molto carina, sia l’interno sia la terrazza. Lo consiglio a tutti :) ~ Giulia C

Hadn't booked. Given an outside table. Evening sun was an initial problem but sunset solved that. Service was quick and very efficient. I had lamb passada with Pillau rice. Wow both were divine. Best I've ever had . We shared the most wonderful light naan bread. More than enough for two people. Hubby had Chicken Biryani. A little spicy but the raita solved that. He thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a lager and I had house white wine. (Only downside no Kingfisher beer.) It was so busy and customer turnaround was phenomal. No rush to leave but it was quicker to pay the bill at till rather than wait. Would recommend highly to anyone. Did not dissapoint 👏👏 ~ Jenny M

Äußerst frische und interessant gewürzte Gerichte. Wir haben schon das ein oder andere Mal indisch gegessen aber dies hier war mit Abstand das beste. Der Service war Championsleage: Regelmäßig gefragt aber überhaupt nicht aufdringlich, das Restaurant war sauber und das Ambiente war stimmig. Sehr gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis! ~ Kordula B

We visited the Taj Mahal for the first time despite many years of coming to Madeira. We decided we needed a break from the.typical Madeiran menus (not that they are bad!) and we are so glad we did. We had a prawn biryana and a prawn bhuna and they were absolutely delicious, right up there with the best Indian meals we have ever had. The spicing was well balanced, hot and aromatic and the prawns were cooked perfectly,, not a hint of rubberiness just sweet softness. The service was good, polite and friendly and the restaurant is situated close to the Pestana Carlton hotel. We will certainly be going again! ~ Steve B

Ein tolles Restaurant mit einer sehr guten Auswahl an vegetarischen Speisen. Und alles ist super Lecker. 👍🏽😁 Wir haben dort einen tollen Abend mit leckeren Speisen und Getränken verbracht. Die Portionen haben eine gute Größe und das Essen ist sehr schön aromatisch und würzig. Wir können dieses Restaurant nur empfehlen. Da wir keine Inder sind, kann ich allerdings nicht beurteilen, wie „Original“ das Essen für einen Inder wirklich ist. Uns hat es jedenfalls sehr gefallen. ~ André S

Was in Madeira 10 days and came here 3 days because the food was THAT good! Traditional chicken curry so so good not spicy but packed with flavour and the garlic naan is devine. Wouldn’t talk about French fries much but Taj Mahals were the nicest I’ve had over here they actually salt them and really fresh! Really authentic Indian with great flavours a must try when your here or if your local! Staff are super nice and very attentive always making sure you have everything you need! 5 stars are well deserved best restaurant I’ve eaten out over here in Funchal, Madeira by far! ~ Nathan O

Heerlijk eten (wel behoorlijk pittig), goed, aardig en snel personeel. Goed koude witte wijn waar je, als je er om vraagt, ook een koeler omheen krijgt. Je kunt binnen of buiten zitten. Buiten met deels uitzicht op zee (door de bomen/struiken heen). Een restaurant om zeker terug te komen. ~ Rob

A lovely fine dinning Indian restaurant, honestly when I travel abroad from India I don’t expect flavourful food , just something that is close to home but today my dinner at Taj Mahal Indian restaurant was superb. Being a vegetarian ordered baigan bharta which is a eggplant preparation, vegetable samosa , daal makhani & veg biryani. It was super tasty & hot when served. Also the roti. One must visit this restaurant, believe me you are in for a treat! The only drawback is that the service is super slow, from giving the menu, to serving & even the bill. ~ Ekta H

We had a great experience here. The food was really good. We didn’t have reservation, but we got seated right away, the staff were nice, the food was really nice, well seasoned, good portion sizes. I was worried to go there due to reviews, but I didn’t face any of those. The only thing I didn’t like was the out door seats initially were ok because of the umbrella, but eventually sun was directly on us and was making it too warm, maybe just moving umbrellas from time to time to keep the guests in the shades could be the extra mile they could go to delight customers ~ Mona F

Eines der besten Restaurants im Hinblick auf Preis/Leistung/Service. Gute klassische indische Küche. Die Präsentation wird nicht Ihre Vorstellungskraft beflügeln, im Gegensatz zum hervorragenden Geschmack traditioneller indischer Gerichte. Die Portionsgrößen sind fair, das Naan, das Fleisch und die Saucen sind ausgezeichnet. Der Spinat aus der Appetizer-Abteilung ist ebenso gut wie alle Fleischgerichte aus dem Hauptteil. Die königlichen Garnelen kommen im Vergleich dazu etwas schwächer rüber. ~ IT T

A tragic lapse, now rectified. Tucked away like a culinary reliquary, the place possesses that rare alchemy of warmth and ease: candlelit conviviality, the gentle clatter of plates, and staff whose hospitality feels less like service and more like benevolent guardianship. One enters as a customer and departs feeling faintly adopted. The curry arrived with the solemn authority of a well-argued sermon—fragrant, complex, and possessing that slow-building heat that warms rather than assaults. Alongside it came naan bread drawn fresh from the tandoor: blistered, pillowy, and perfumed with smoke, as though the oven itself had whispered secrets into the dough. It was, in short, a revelation. I have already begun plotting my return—because once one discovers such a sanctuary, it would be sheer folly not to make a habit of worship. ~ Aiden L

Very good option for Indian food in Funchal. The restaurant is very well located, opposite the Pestana Carlton hotel and near the Savoy. The food is well prepared and is of good quality. The service is great and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Sitting on the terrace whilst having your evening meal is a great experience. The prices are reasonable for the location and quality of food. The meat is apparently halal (chicken and lamb) but best to check with staff, as it may depend on availability of supply. ~ Mushtaq A
